Cultural Day at Braeside involves students, teachers and parents who create, participate and celebrate culture and art in our community. Our students are welcome and encouraged to celebrate our diversity by performing activities in class and in assembly.
Our students dressed in attires from different cultures and nationalities across the world. In Braeside, we have such a rich culture based on different nationalities represented at the school. We are a proud international school with over 50 nationalities represented at the school. What a rich culture we have!
Cultural day is a chance where we celebrate each other with our different and unique backgrounds. Students have an opportunity to showcase diversity through multiculturalism in arts, music, fashion and food. Braeside High School marked it’s 2018 Cultural Day on 23rd March with spectacular cultural events to appreciate cultures beyond our borders. The day was remarkable with students and staff beaming in their colourful native attires that showcased different cultures from across the globe.
With these activities and attires, our students and staff demonstrated and promoted virtues of a united and one school - Braeside. Amazing displays and activities depicting the culture of various nationalities highlighting their food, customs and tradition was truly captured at the school. Indeed the moments and events by the students was commendable. Cultural Day celebration should be a termly event!
We held our Kiswahili Day on Friday, 16th March 2018. The theme of the day was ‘Kenya Nchi Nzuri, Kiswahili Lugha Yangu.’ All students from Early Years Foundation Stage to Year 6 were involved. The following were the activities undertaken by each year group;
EYFS, Year 1 & 2 (Singing games)
EYFS – Mabata wanaogelea
Year 1 – Zuum, zuum nyuki lia wee
Year 2 – Kuna mtu shambani
Year 3 & 4 (Swahili foods and drinks)
Research about different foods and drinks by the Swahili people including;
- Kuku wa kupaka
- Samaki wa kupaka
- Chips mayai
Year 5 (Swahili cultural dress)
Year 6 (Swahili history)
Research on the origin of Kiswahili language.
We also had guest performers from Kilimani Primary School who recited a shairi entitled ‘Kiswahili Kitukuzwe.’

We began last week with a new story ‘Polar Bear, Polar Bear, what do you hear?’ The children used their listening skills to explore the sounds within our outdoor environment. During our listening walk, we used an iPad to record the sounds in the surroundings. After this, the children made different animal sounds from the story. Some roared like a lion, some hissed like a snake while others brayed like a horse.
The highlight of the week was singing and dancing to the rhyme we learnt. How about singing along and making the movements together with your child at home? Here goes the rhyme…
Polar bear, Polar bear,
Make no sound.
Polar bear, Polar bear
Dance on your toes.
Polar bear, Polar bear
Touch your nose.
We also had polar bear paw trails in class and the children had fun comparing the sizes of their feet to the paw prints.
This week, we shall continue to play a listening and following instructions game, go on a listening walk and use the story characters to make animal prints on play dough.
FOUNDATION STAGE 1
Last week, the children explored ‘trains’ as another mode of transport. Through this sub-topic, we learnt that:
- A person who controls a train is called an Engine Driver.
- Trains use either steam, diesel or electricity as fuel for the engine.
- Trains have special wheels made out of steel and can only move on a railway track.
The song of the week was“The Good Morning Train is coming how are you? Choo choo.”
We have also been reminding ourselves about taking care of each other’s feelings. We are happy to say that our Braestars are working hard towards being kind and gentle to each other and using their magic words.
The children have also named different sounds they can hear around the school as we went for sound walks and played listening games. Please continue playing listening games with your child; the listening skills they develop through these activities will aid in their reading skills.
This week we shall talk about road signs, which we will place at the wheeled area. Noticing logos and print in the environment is linked to early reading. To support this, please encourage your child to spot and identify different signs during your journey to and from school.
FOUNDATION STAGE 2
The trip to Trufoods (K) Ltd offered a vast learning experience for the children.
Before entering the factory, we all had to get into a safety gear which included, hair nets and mouth/nose masks. We then sanitised our hands and started our learning journey inside the factory.
This is what the children saw:
- Grinders, mixers and sachet sealing machines for Choco Primo
- Boilers and coolers for sauces and jams
- Sauce and jam filling machines
- Labelling and Coding machines
- Sealing and packaging machines
They also learnt new words such as: rolling belt, pressure pipes and magnetic cleaner. After going round the factory, we had a picnic lunch at the garden within the factory. The children were then given some gifts which included a sachet of choco primo, glucose and jam cups.
During the week, we built on the children’s experience of the trip and linked this to the different learning areas. This was done by: building and constructing industrial machines, drawing and labelling some of the machinery, linking 3D shapes to what they saw and pretend play among others.

This week, we shall focus on machines found in our home kitchens.
‘It’s raining, it’s pouring, the old man is snoring...’ is what the Crèche children had to say about the rainy weather at the beginning of last week. The forming of the grey clouds and thunder echoing in the background triggered a discussion on rain; where it comes from and what kind of clothing to put on during rainy days. The children brought in their boots, umbrellas, and raincoats and off we went to explore the muddy puddles. Some children splish splashed in the muddy puddles while others helped to clean the muddy wheeled area with brooms and soapy water.
As we continue with our fascinating ‘Teddy Bears’ theme, some of the Crèche children went on a second bear hunt while others continued to build on the bear cave outside our classroom area. This time we had our bag packs, a map, flashlights and hats on. The children listened to the different forest sounds and some of the words used to describe their findings were growl, scared, under, bear, hunt, and paw prints.
This week we shall embark on a new story ‘Polar Bear, what do you hear.’ We shall play a listening and following instructions game, go on a listening walk and create handprint story characters.
Foundation Stage 1
Last week, the children were excited to talk about aeroplanes, helicopters, jets and hot air balloons. Some narrated their experiences about travelling in an aeroplane while others talked about planes they have seen in movies and cartoons.
We learnt that a person who controls an aeroplane is a pilot, this was a stepping stone for our discussions about pilots and an airport. The children actively participated in role play activities where they pretended to be pilots flying big aeroplanes. They also built aeroplanes and helicopters using wooden blocks.
The children were quite astonished to find out that there are some air crafts that do not need an engine, but just strong winds to fly just like kites; these are called hang gliders. It later gave us an opportunity to make kites which we flew outside on a windy day.
During our nature walk around the school, we explored different textures using our sense of touch. The children acquired new vocabulary such as: smooth, rough, bumpy, soft, hard, prick, furry and slimy. Kindly provide your child with opportunities to use the new words learnt at home.
This week we shall focus on transport by rail.
Foundation Stage 2
Children have been using most of the magic words while interacting with each other. We reviewed the golden rules (Pg. 96 in the school planner) and focused on two of them; be polite and gentle and do not interrupt. Kindly encourage the children to continue with the same at home.
Through role play activities, the children were able to understand the difference between an engineer and an operator. They are now able to identify a few machines which need operators to function and those which don’t. Some children went ahead and designed a newly invented car and labelled it.
While at the malleable area, some children used 3D shapes to design a model of their dream machine. This gave them an opportunity to learn the shape names – cube, sphere, cuboid and cone. They are now able to describe the features of these shapes by comparing one with another.
Our trip to Trufoods Ltd was a rich learning experience for the children. We shall enlighten you more about it in thist week’s newsletter.
Last week the children did tests in Math and English. They are slowly getting the hang of tests and are able to read instructions given.
In our learning journey last week, we begun to: read the time to o’clock and half past; sequence months of the year and days of the week. We also talked about features of spring and learned a new song.
Children have begun to learn about Wangari Mathai and the importance of planting trees.
We continue to learn new sounds in our phonics sets and also alternative pronunciation of different letters.
Last week was the week of testing and assessment, but we took it all in good spirit. The teachers are now in the process of marking the scripts.
During the KS1 assembly the children had a session with Mr. Makuba where they learnt how to draw cartoon faces. The process involved organizing shapes and lines together until a recognizable cartoon face was achieved.
The drawing session was designed to give the children the tools they need to begin their artistic journey into self-expression, reflection and creative thinking.
All the tests were successfully completed last Friday. Normal lessons have resumed to enable us to complete the term’s curriculum needs. We are now waiting for the results which will be released this week in readiness for the Parents’ Review meetings which will be held next week.
We acknowledge each child for sitting patiently at their desk for the last four days to think and write the answers to many questions.

Kiswahili Day will be held on Friday, 16th March 2018.
The children have received instructions on the Swahili foods and drinks to research on.
Last week was pretty quiet as the children sat for their end of term tests. Feedback will be given this week.
Normal lessons resume today according to the class timetable. Children are expected to have the necessary stationery.
On Friday this week, we will be celebrating Kiswahili Day. Children in Year 4 will be presenting Swahili dishes. Parents are requested to assist the children with the materials they may require for the day. The dress code will be Swahili attire.
The deadline for the second project (15th March) is fast approaching. Children are reminded to submit their projects before this date.
Last week was the test week for end of term 2 tests. All the children were able to do their tests and are looking forward to the results. A big thank you to parents for supporting the children with revision. The children have received some of their test results. The remaining ones will be given in the this week.
The above named trip was very successful. We wish to thank the parents for allowing their children to take part and picking them up in good time.
These are scheduled for Thursday 22nd and Friday 23rd March 2018.
A letter indicating each parent’s time slot will be sent out this week.
We will continue with these lessons this week on Wednesday from 3:45 to 4:45pm. Parents are kindly requested to make transport arrangements for children not on school transport. For those on the school transport, there will be a late bus departing after the session.
Last week was quite exciting in Crèche as the children explored more about Teddy Bears. We started off the week with a pretend bear hunt at the A- Level area where the children eagerly followed a trail of paws in the forest and finally, at the end of the path, found a teddy bear. Some used their binoculars to look for more bears as others took photos of the teddy bear.
The story of ‘Brown Bear, Brown Bear’ gave us opportunities to have discussions on what bears eat and learn names of different colours. We then created a sensory tub with soapy water and Lego where the children pretended to be bears fishing for their food. We also dramatised the story and the children willingly retold some parts of it as they sequenced the order of the animals.
To crown it all up, we had a show and tell session and a picnic. The children brought their favourite teddy bear and talked about them as they enjoyed their picnic at the wheeled area.
This week we shall learn some bear songs and bake bear cookies.
FOUNDATION STAGE 1
As we continue learning about different means of transport, last week we looked at pictures of some modes used in the water. We focused on ships, boats, ferries and submarines. The discussions enabled the children to learn new words such as; sail, oars, mast and buoyancy force.
The children were thrilled to go on a pretend voyage in a boat. They rowed it using oars while singing the song, “Row row row your boat…”
Did you know?
As a ship displaces or pushes the water out of the way, the displaced water wants to return to its original location but it can’t because that’s where the ship is now, so the water pushes the ship upwards. The force which pushes the ship up is called ‘buoyancy’ hence it floats.
We also compared weights of objects and used mathematical language to compare heavy and light by weighing various natural materials in our environment. The children were surprised to find out that some objects may be small in size but heavy in weight.
This week, we shall focus on airplanes and link this to various textures.
FOUNDATION STAGE 2
Last week was full of exciting activities as the children energetically participated in assembling simple machines such as inclined planes and see-saws using available resources both in and outdoors.
They started off by planning for their inventions with their team members, chose the resources needed and went ahead to make their models. A number of mathematical concepts were displayed during these activities. Language such as heavier than, besides, next to and under among many others were being used. The children were also able to relate the shapes of the machines to real life objects as they described features and compared one to another.
We also discussed a few other common machines such as wheel barrows, washing machines and weighing scales which enabled the children to describe their features and functions. We then came up with a list of items we can carry, wash and weigh using these machines.
The children have been applying their phonic skills quite well while attempting reading and writing activities. Kindly continue to support us by engaging your child in fun filled activities which gives them opportunities to enhance these skills further.
This week, we shall continue learning about machine operators and engineers.
