Braeside High Week 6 Updates

We have come the end of the first half of term and I would like to take this chance to thank you for your continued support. The week was quite eventful and fun filled.

Under 18 Hockey

We are pleased to inform you that our students Waridi (8S), Nina (8N), Janice (10K) and Matthew (9S) have been selected to join the Kenya National Under 18 Hockey team. They have been undergoing a series of training sessions and once chosen, they will be             representing Kenya in Youth Olympic tournament in Algeria.

Taster Days

Year six students had 3 taster days in High School as part of our transition programme. From the change in lesson venue, new ties, interactive lessons, Lab experiments and introduction to new        subjects, to the much-anticipated school canteen experience, the taster days were crowned by an exhilarating trip to the safari walk.

 My experience was amazing and I’m really looking forward to  joining Middle School. The teachers are nice. The canteen was really fun and the high schoolers were supportive and nice.’ By Tumi

 Entrepreneurship Day

On Wednesday this week we had the annual             Braeside entrepreneurship day where we witnessed great business minds as the students were able to work individually or come together, form and          register companies share business ideas, advertise and sell their products and services. Bravo to the young movers and shakers as they soar great heights in the business world!


Next week Year 7 and 8 will be going for their annual pastoral trips. We wish them safe trip and a wonderful stay as they engage in team building and other activities that aim to aid in character building.

From the Sports Desk

This Tuesday, the Under 15 Girls’ Netball team had a tournament at Hillcrest where they won 22-12 against Hillcrest. On Wednesday, Under 13 Girls Netball had a match at home against Premier Academy. Braeside won 21-8.

Enjoy the half term break with the children and looking forward to seeing you back on Monday, 4th June 2018.

Braeside High New Uniform

This is to give you advance notice of this change effective this September to ensure you  are aware of the new requirements that will enable you to plan your uniform purchases between now and the start of the new academic year.

However, students will be allowed to be in the current uniform for the whole of the 2018/2019 academic year. The complete changeover will be in September 2019. The trouser, skirt, sweater and blazer will be black and ties will not change.

Braeside wins the Braeburn Nanyuki Cross Country

On Saturday, 5th May 2018, our U9, U11 & U13 cross country team had a great start to the day. The team arrived at Braeside in good time for a five o’clock departure.

The four hour journey to Nanyuki was safe and this led to a good performance across the board.

Five schools took part in the cross country. These were; Braeburn Gitanga, Braeburn Imani, Braeside, St. Christopher’s and the host Braeburn Nanyuki.

Not even the long journey could dampen the team’s spirit as the participants  displayed their track prowess as per the results below;

Early Years Foundation Stage Week 3 Updates


Did you know birds swallow their food whole or in chunks, and they rely on their gizzard which is part of the digestive system to break up their food into tiny bits?

This week the children enthusiastically explored the beaks of different species of birds. First, they watched a video of a variety of birds such as the pelican, wood pecker, humming bird and crow. Then, we discussed different kinds of food which birds eat and how their beaks are shaped in a specific way to help them eat their food.

In the small world tray we had play dough and different items that represent the beaks such as pegs, spoons and tweezers. As they played and picked things, some children were able to compare the sizes and also discovered that it was easier to pick up worms with some beaks than others.

After this activity, the children showed interest in making their own bird-feeders. We set up a tray outdoors with tissue rolls, green grams, sunflower seeds and peanut butter for the children to put their imagination into play. They really enjoyed smearing the peanut butter on the tissue roll and designing their own bird feeders. They were very excited to put their models outdoors and eagerly waited for birds to come and eat. Our school ducks were the first to the join the party, pecking the seeds that had fallen on the ground.

Next week we shall look for bird nests in our school yard, create bird nests with paper, grass and spaghetti and talk about the different body parts of a bird.  


This week the FS1 children listened to and sang two nursery rhymes.  We started off with ‘Incy Wincy spider.’ In our small world tray the children made spider webs using wool, tissue rolls and sticks.

Later, they came up their own movements as they pretended to crawl like spiders in their webs. We also played different positional games with a giant spider web which we made outdoors. During these activities, we used vocabulary such as: one more, how many, altogether, in, out, up, down, under and on top.

The children also learnt the ‘Humpty dumpty’ rhyme and went ahead to build a wall for Humpty using construction blocks, go for an egg hunt at the sand pit area and participated in an egg race outdoors. The egg race helped the children come up with various creative ways to help them balance the egg in the spoon.

Linking Literacy to Math, the children were engaged in creative problem solving activities, one of them being answering questions and determining whether a set of pictures has an odd picture whose name doesn’t rhyme with the others.

Next week we shall continue with Hickory Dickory Dock, and learn another new rhyme, Three Little Kittens.’


Did you know Dr. Suess has written over 40 books and he used to write every day for 8 hours?

This week we read “I can read with my eyes shut.” The children now understand the importance of reading and have shown great interest in picking books from the reading area as they attempt to read them.

Sharing stories, talking and singing every day helps your child’s development in lots of ways.

Reading and sharing stories can:

  • Help your child become familiar with sounds, words, language and the value of books.
  • Spark your child’s imagination, stimulate curiosity and help cognitive development.
  • Help your child learn the difference between ‘real’ and ‘make-believe.’
  • Help your child understand change and new or frightening events, and also the strong emotions that can go along with them.
  • Help your child make up their own stories as they explore creative thinking, problem solving and writing.

Reading stories with children has benefits for grown-ups too. The special time you spend reading together promotes bonding and helps to build your relationship. This is important for your child to develop holistically.

Braeside High Week 3 Updates

Dear Parents/Guardians,

I wish to commend our students and the teaching staff individually and  collectively, for the commitment to raising standards into teaching and learning. The standards in the classroom and beyond have improved considerably, as illustrated by the many and varied achievements of our students.

IGCSE/GCE AS /A Level  Examinations

The IGCSE and AS, A level examinations begun this week. We would like to wish all candidates every success in their examinations. The candidates already have their timetables and are encouraged to adhere to the examinations regulations and school expectations as shared during the Parents/Students Examination meetings.

Please take note that students will be required to return school textbooks as soon as they clear with the last paper of each subject. This makes clearing process easier to avoid any hitches when the student comes for their results in August.

Exiting School at the end of an Exam

Students are allowed to go home after their exams as long as the key times have passed. We would wish to advise that Parents/Guardians give a note in the morning to be dropped off at the reception authorising such exits. This will reduce the need to make repeated phone calls seeking for such authorisation.

Attendance and Punctuality

I am pleased to report that our whole school attendance remains above our target of 97% - thank you. There has also been an improvement in our punctuality. I urge parents to ensure that they are punctual when dropping their children to school and when collecting them at the end of the school day. 

Notice of school events will continue to be sent via newsletters, emails or sms. We will also ensure that the website is updated regularly and give as much notice as possible for events;

Changes to School Uniform Expectations from September 2018

We would like to notify parents of some changes to our uniform policy for the next academic year.

Essentially, we will be changing the expectations so that students will need to wear a specific style and fabric of garment purchased directly from our approved uniform suppliers. Information and images of the new items will be availed within the next two weeks on the school’s website and newsletter.

The changes will come into effect from the first day of next term in August 2018. The items of uniform that will change include the trouser, skirt, shirt/ blouse, sweater and blazer. With that in mind, our uniform suppliers ‘Animet’ and ‘Image First’, will be stocking the new-style uniform from June 2018 onwards.

We believe uniform is very important in terms of the message it sends about the respect students have for their school.
